Designing Budgify: An Intuitive App for Tracking and Conquering Expenses

At&nbsp;Sierra Living Concepts&nbsp;(SLC), we identified that our cart and checkout process were not performing as expected. Customers were having trouble completing their purchases due to the complexity of the process, with long forms, unclear error messages, and no clear indication of the total cost until the very end. These issues led to increased abandonment rates and frustrated users.

The redesign focused on simplifying the checkout process, removing unnecessary steps, and making pricing more transparent. By optimizing the experience, the goal was to increase user engagement, reduce abandonment, and ultimately drive higher sales.

I served as the&nbsp;Lead UI/UX Designer&nbsp;for this project, collaborating closely with my Growth Product Manager (<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/sss99/">Saswata S. SenGupta</a>) and the key stakeholders across the company throughout the entire process.

Problem 1:&nbsp;Distractions and Overload on Cart Page

Too many distractions on the cart page, such as excessive product recommendations and non-relevant information, cause users to abandon their carts.

The cart page is overloaded with other product recommendations for cross-selling purpose, leading users to navigate away from the page to explore other items.

By introducing unnecessary distractions, users are diverted from their primary intent to complete a purchase, thereby reducing the likelihood of conversion.

Problem 2:&nbsp;High Checkout Abandonment Rate

Users face challenges in completing the checkout process, leading to a consistently high abandonment rate.

The overall checkout abandonment rate has consistently remained high, with data showing a&nbsp;74.09%&nbsp;abandonment rate in Q2+Q3 and a&nbsp;70.77%&nbsp;abandonment rate in October-November. This points to users leaving the checkout process without completing their purchases.

A high abandonment rate indicates that a significant portion of potential revenue is being lost daily. This results in missed opportunities for conversions and a direct impact on overall sales and revenue.

Problem 3:&nbsp;Mobile and Desktop Multi-Checkout Flow Navigation and Form Field Issues

Users face difficulties with the checkout flow and form fields, both on desktop and mobile, due to a lack of inline validation and complex multi-page navigation.

Both&nbsp;mobile and desktop users encountered difficulties with navigation, particularly in viewing detailed pricing information and filling out address and payment fields. On mobile, users experienced pinch-zooming issues, making it challenging to view important details. Additionally, the unclear distinction between the billing and shipping address fields confused checkout.

These navigation and form field issues led to user frustration and confusion, resulting in increased abandonment rates across both mobile and desktop platforms. The lack of clarity and ease in completing the checkout process caused users to abandon their carts before completing their purchase, especially for mobile users who expect a seamless experience.

Problem 4:&nbsp;Complex Delivery Options and Confusion

The delivery options page includes too many choices and services, which confuses users and causes hesitation.

The delivery options page&nbsp;(Page 3)&nbsp;led to confusion due to too many details, including White Glove Service and Curbside Delivery options, causing a high abandonment rate.

When users are presented with too many choices or unclear pricing, they are more likely to abandon the checkout process. Simplifying delivery options and explanations can reduce friction.

Redesigning the checkout process to be smoother and more intuitive will decrease abandonment rates, enhancing the user experience and increasing overall sales.

A streamlined, user-friendly checkout flow minimizes friction in the purchase process, directly improving conversion rates and leading to higher revenue.

Addressing key pain points like surprise fees, confusing navigation, and poor mobile usability will create a seamless shopping experience that improves customer satisfaction and encourages repeat business.

The&nbsp;new&nbsp;redesigned cart page strips away product recommendations and other detours, then layers a lightweight entry point for every type of shopper— quick sign-in, instant account creation, or one-step guest checkout—all inside modal overlays that keep the cart visible in the background.

The legacy five-step funnel was collapsed into a lightning-fast, three-page flow—Cart → Address → Delivery &amp; Payment—with live totals, inline error handling, and a sticky order summary that travels down the screen on both desktop and mobile.

The new Shipping Address page consolidates all contact and address fields into one clean screen, adds real-time error feedback, and keeps a collapsible order summary visible, eliminating pinch-zoom, page reloads, and confusion between billing and shipping details.

Solution 4: Simplified Delivery Method Selector

The new checkout step shows only&nbsp;two clearly-labeled delivery cards—Curb-Side (free) and White-Glove (paid)—with concise bullet summaries and an upfront price, while the sticky order summary stays visible on mobile for instant cost confirmation.

A major challenge was the&nbsp;‘fee shock’&nbsp;caused by the late disclosure of shipping costs. We addressed this by incorporating a live shipping and tax estimator directly into the cart, providing cost transparency upfront. This addressed the transparency issue, building trust, and reducing cart abandonment.

Even after our major UX wins, there’s still room to squeeze out extra conversions and keep hesitant shoppers engaged. Here’s what I’d explore next:

Redesigning Cart & Checkout, Reducing Abandonment by 26% Across 480k User Sessions.

This case study details my experience redesigning the category and paid landing pages for the "Sierra Living Concepts" shopping website. The project aimed to improve user engagement, increase qualified leads, and reduce bounce rates, all while enhancing the overall user experience.&nbsp;

Problem 1: Lack of Storytelling and Brand Differentiation

7 out of 10 users could not describe the brand’s unique qualities after browsing the old category pages, which were static, desktop-centric grids without narratives or value props. Impact:

A weak brand connection led to shorter dwell times compared to competitors, resulting in lower engagement and conversion potential.

Problem 2: Weak Initial Engagement on Paid-Landing Pages

The old ad-landing templates were static grids without persuasive copy or trust elements in the first viewport, causing users from paid campaigns to leave before exploring further.

Low first-impression impact meant fewer scrolls and weaker add-to-cart rates, reducing ROI on ad spend.

Problem 3: Desktop-Centric Layout Despite Mobile-Heavy Traffic

Category &amp; FID grids were designed for desktop spacing and scaling, forcing mobile users to pinch, zoom, and scroll excessively to view products.

Mobile visitors—&nbsp;78% of total traffic experienced slower navigation and higher drop-off, weakening the largest conversion channel.

By redesigning these pages with storytelling elements, trust signals, and mobile-first layouts, we aim to enhance user interaction, decrease bounce rates, and increase add-to-cart actions from both organic and paid traffic sources.

Optimizing ad-landing (Feature ID) pages for immediate engagement and lead capture will ensure high-cost paid traffic converts at a higher rate, improving campaign profitability.

Implement modular, reusable page components (such as hero sections, USP bars, and lead cards) to ensure design consistency, accelerate rollout across product categories, and streamline future optimization efforts.

Deliver a visually rich, story-led journey where shoppers instantly understand the brand’s unique value, feel reassured about purchase protection, and are motivated to explore more products.

Ensure that product cards, filters, and CTAs are fully optimized for thumb-friendly mobile navigation, allowing users to browse and buy without frustration.

Paid landing pages now feature persuasive copy, trust elements, and a Lead-Card module within the first viewport, replacing static grids that offered no incentive to explore. The Lead-Card auto-prefills SKU info and connects users directly to an expert chat.

Solution 3:&nbsp;Touch-Friendly Category Design

We replaced the old desktop-centric layout with a mobile-first, filter-aware grid. Product cards now auto-fit to screen size, with larger tap zones and optimized spacing for thumbs. Swatch previews and progressive disclosure make browsing smoother without pinch-to-zoom frustration.

One major challenge was effectively addressing the "Trust Deficit", and we tried to overcome this by creating the "USP Trust Bar"&nbsp;which concisely presented key value propositions prominently on the page. This trust stacking approach proved remarkably effective, significantly reducing bounce rates, especially for mobile users.

The redesigned category and paid landing pages resulted in significant improvements across all target metrics. We achieved a 34% increase in qualified leads, a 9.6% decrease in bounce rate (from 60.8% to 51.2%), a 24% increase in average session duration, and a 27% increase in the Add-to-Cart rate from ad-landing pages. All improvements were statistically significant (p&lt;0.05).

Even with strong UI-UX changes, there’s room to grow. The goal now is to convert more hesitant shoppers. Here’s what I’d focus on next:

•&nbsp;Introduce Personalization for Returning Visitors&nbsp;- Use browsing history to surface relevant product recommendations and pre-filtered categories for repeat users, improving efficiency and likelihood of purchase.

Creating a Unified Category & Paid-Landing Experience for Furniture Buyers

Gamification gave users motivation, but the homepage still failed to guide them. Many described it&nbsp;&nbsp;“a maze with no clear starting point” Without a sense of direction, users lost momentum, even if they were excited after onboarding.

My task was to transform confusion into clarity — redesigning the homepage as a daily wellness dashboard that simplified choices, highlighted progress, and encouraged consistent action.

To uncover why users were disengaging after onboarding, we conducted 25+ user interviews and usability reviews focused on Nirva’s homepage experience. Here’s what we learned:

These insights revealed the core issue: the homepage failed to provide clarity, prioritization, and direction—leaving users lost, unmotivated, and more likely to drop off.

Redesign the homepage to guide users clearly, reducing drop-offs and increasing daily engagement.

Surface the most important actions upfront to ensure higher completion of diet logs, yoga, and wellness tasks.

Position Nirva as a daily companion for wellness by making the homepage a central, engaging hub.

Help users know exactly where to start by providing a structured, prioritized daily plan.

Simplify navigation so that core actions like yoga practice and diet logging are always within reach.

Show clear progress and upcoming sessions, empowering users to track their journey and stay motivated.

Revamping Nirva Health’s homepage brought clarity to the user journey and created a stronger sense of direction. First task completion rose by 40%, while user confusion dropped by 65%. By surfacing key actions and progress at the start, the homepage transformed from a cluttered screen into a daily wellness dashboard&nbsp;— guiding users with confidence and improving overall retention.

1. Refining the Information Hierarchy

Continue testing different layouts and priorities to ensure that the most critical tasks always remain visible without overwhelming users.
  

Introduce dynamic homepage cards that adapt to each user’s goals—whether focused on yoga, diet, or workshops—to make the experience feel more personal.
